Roy’s research has garnered many honors, including the National Communication Outstanding Dissertation Award and numerous Top Paper panels at regional and national conventions. He has published approximately 60 scholarly articles and book chapters plus dozens of reviews.

Creative Writing

As a creative writer, Roy has published more than 350 individual poems and essays as well as two poetry books. He has served extensively as a contest judge and editor for literary publications and organizations throughout the nation.


A 17-time nominee for national and university teaching awards, his online courses have earned 2 university-wide awards.


Roy’s service includes 5 years on the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education Board of Governors, 11 years as Basic Communication Course Director at 2 universities, 2 consecutive terms on the Executive Committee of the statewide University of North Carolina Faculty Assembly, and several years as a Faculty Senator at three different universities, including election as Faculty Senate President. He is founding co-editor of the Journal of Applied Learning in Higher Education and has served on the editorial boards of many scholarly journals. He served as the 2009-2010 President of the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology and received the Betty Jo Welch Award from the Carolinas Communication Association for outstanding service to the communication field.

Dr. Roy Schwartzman

Roy is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. A graduate of the University of Georgia (A.B., M.A.) and the University of Iowa (Ph.D.), he has taught at Ohio University, Newberry College, the University of South Carolina, and Northwest Missouri State University. He was hired by UNCG as a full professor in 2006.
